Golf

One of the most expensive sports of the world, golf was started in Nepal by the Royal families. The history of golf in Nepal goes back to the time when a delegation of Rana ministers returned home with golf clubs from a visit to Scotland. They started playing golf in what is today's Gaucharan. The first real golf tournament Lava Cup was started in 1920. We have some famous golf courses that provide excellent opportunity to play in the tranquil natural beauty and in the back drop of spectacular Himalayan panorama. Here are some of our golf courses for golfing tour in Nepal.

Gokarna Forest Golf Resort (18 holes), Kathmandu
The Gokarna Forest Golf Resort, is one of the finest in South Asia. Against a backdrop of the snow capped Himalayan Mountains, in close proximity to the heart of the city of Kathmandu, the scenic 470 acres Gokarna Forest Reserve encompasses the stunning golf course designed by Gleneagles Golf Developments of Scotland. The only Bent Grass Greens in South Asia make this one of the highlights of the professional tour circuits in the region. It is a 72-course golf area with 18 holes.

Nepal Golf Club (9 holes), Kathmandu
Nepal Golf Club, perched conjointly on the sloping land alongside the airport strip at Tilganga. Established in 1829 by the ruling Ranas, the course was given royal status in 1911 and claims to be one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia. Selected professionals and complete practice facilities are at hand for those who wish to follow that irresistible urge to improve, or perhaps, just to make a start at joining the golfing fraternity.

Himalayan Golf Course (9 holes), Pokhara
The Himalayan Golf Club in Pokhara situated about 6 kilometers away from the city is a recently completed pro-championship designed 9 holes golf course which is located in a beautiful amphitheater like setting of a river canyon scene with a panoramic view of the Annapurna Himalayan range.

Nirvana Country Club (9 holes), Dharan.
Nirvana Golf Course is one of the biggest and oldest golf courses in Nepal within an area of 69 hectares. It was built by British in 1962 in Ghopa Camp, Dharan, and Eastern Nepal. It has an 18 Hole Golf course with 5990 yardages, 70 pars with one of the best facilities in the country capable of hosting major and International Golfing events. It has the record of hosting many events in the field of Golf. Nirvana Golf course was designed by Nuffield Trust (UK).

Army Golf Course (9 holes - private), Kathmandu

The army golf course is just next to the Guhyashwori temple behind the airport. It is a nine hole course with par 36 on both nines with alternate tees.

 

Yeti Golf Club (9 holes, par 3, Fulbari Resort), Pokhara

The Yeti's Golf Course is part of the beautiful Fulbari Resort and Spa located on a plateau in the southern part of the Pokhara valley overlooking the Seti River gorge.

 

Located 200 km. west of Kathmandu. The valley with its lakes and foothills lies in the shadow of the mighty Annapurna Himal. Dominating the Pokhara valley is Machapuchare peak (The Fish's Tail).

 

The nine-hole executive golf course is located on the edge of the gorge and presents some demanding, even fearsome shots across gaping abysses. A 5800 yard course, it consists of two nines generally utilizing alternate tee and pin positions. It fits in well with Nepal's other courses offering a fine blend of holiday golf in a wonderful climate.


The best time for a play is during the dry season between October and March. Golf clubs in Kathmandu and Pokhara offer excellent courses with magnificent view of the Himalayas.
