The Land of Mountain Crests," Sikkim, lies between the kingdoms of Bhutan in the east, Nepal to its west and Tibet to the north. This small stretch of rugged land is but a speck on the world map but its size belies its richness and diversity of culture flora and fauna. Sikkim is one of the most beautiful and untouched areas in the Himalayas offering visitors pristine nature in all its grandeur. The worlds 3rd highest mountain, Mt. Khangchendzongna (28,156 ft), and it's attendant peaks - Pandim, Narsing, Kabru, Talung, Siniolchu, Pau-Hunri, Simvo, and Jopuno present a surreal vista where local legends depict this area as "the alter of the Gods."The tiny Himalayan state of Sikkim coupled with near by Darjeeling in West Bengal offers some very different visions of the Himalayas.

High peaks with sacred natural lakes worshipped by the people of Sikkim where local legends abound.

Entry formalities (PERMITS)

Along with an Indian Visa, foreigners are required to obtain Inner Line permits for Sikkim, which are valid for 15 days which can be extended for a further 15 days once in Sikkim. However no special permits are required for travelling to Darjeeling & Kalimpong. The permits are available at all Indian Missions / Consulates abroad and Sikkim Tourism Offices at Delhi, Calcutta, Siliguri and Gangtok.

Visas & Permits

All foreign tourists other than Nepal and Bhutan nationals required a passport with an Indian visa prior to arrival. Visitors require an Inner Line permit (ILP) to enter Sikkim. An ILP is valid for 15 days & can be extended by the state government twice for 30 days of 15 days each. ILP is available at all India missions, Sikkim Tourism offices at New Delhi, Kolkata, Siliguri & Rangpo Tourist Lodge on the basis of an India visa.

Trekking Permits are requires. Trekking is only allowed in groups (minimum 2 persons) and must be arranged through a Sikkim’s travel agent. Check with your reliable local tour operator and the Indian Embassy for the most efficient method of obtaining these permits.

Consult your doctor or local health department for requirements and recommendation concerning travel in India.  Allow plenty of time before travel.


The currency is the Indian rupee. Some banks in Gangtok exchange cash or traveller cheques. Master card Visa card widely accepted. Multiple ATM outlets in Gangtok.

What to carry?

In Sikkim the climate and the weather conditions can vary extensively. Your local tour operator will provide you with a packing list. Bring any food item which will help you up steep slopes and portable water treatments if you choose. Avoid skimpy clothes.
